The Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals meet on August 6, 2026 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, opening the NFL’s 2026 preseason in a building that will spend the same week honoring two players who once defined each franchise.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET according to the Hall of Fame’s official schedule, though NBC Sports listed the game for 7 p.m. ET in its own coverage. The broadcast runs on NBC and Peacock, and Kenny Pickett has been named the starting quarterback for Carolina.

A Class Built Around These Two Cities

Two days after the opening kickoff, on Saturday, August 8 at 12 p.m. ET, five men will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Drew Brees, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig. Fitzgerald spent his entire career with the Arizona Cardinals, and Kuechly spent his entire career with the Carolina Panthers, so the induction lands as a direct echo of the two teams warming up on the same field days earlier.

That timing gives the weekend its shape.

History Repeating Itself in Canton

Canton has hosted this exact matchup’s lineage before, in a different form. The very first Hall of Fame Game in NFL history took place on August 11, 1962, when the St. Louis Cardinals, the franchise now based in Arizona, played the New York Giants to a 21-21 tie. It is a detail that ties Thursday’s game back to the origin of the exhibition itself, six decades before Fitzgerald ever put on a Cardinals uniform.

Thursday’s game is the sixth Hall of Fame Game appearance for Arizona and its first since 2017. Carolina is making just its second appearance in the event, having debuted in 1995 with a 20-14 win over Jacksonville.

These two franchises already have recent history worth noting. When Arizona and Carolina last met, in Week 2 of the 2025 regular season, the Cardinals beat the Panthers 27-22 after building a 27-3 lead. That result offers a small measure of context heading into Thursday’s rematch, even if preseason rosters and rotations will look nothing like a Week 2 lineup.

Preseason Gives Way to the Regular Season

The Hall of Fame Game marks the start of a preseason calendar that leads to the 2026 regular-season opener on September 9, when the New England Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks, also airing on NBC and Peacock. For now, though, Canton belongs to Carolina and Arizona, and to the two Hall of Fame inductees whose careers gave each franchise a defining face before either team ever set foot on that field this week.
