NFL Training Camp 2026: How It Actually Works

How NFL training camp actually works in 2026: roster limits, padded-practice rules, joint practices, and when preseason games and final cuts hit.

Camp doors swing open this week, and two teams effectively start more than a week before everyone else. The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers report their veterans on July 22, first in the league, because they meet in the Hall of Fame Game on August 6 in Canton, Ohio. The other 30 teams follow in a staggered wave that ends July 28, when the whole league is officially in camp. But what actually happens once players report, and how does training camp turn a 90-man roster in shorts into a 53-man roster ready for Week 1? Here’s how the mechanics work.

What “Reporting” Actually Means

Report day isn’t padded practice number one. Camp opens with a five-day acclimation period, and the report date itself counts as day one. That first day is limited to physicals, meetings and conditioning work, no helmets, no drills. Days two through five allow a walkthrough plus one padded session with a hard cap on field time, but still no live contact. Only after that stretch can a team hit at full speed. That’s why the first practice that actually looks like football is usually four or five days after a team’s report date, not the day players walk through the door.

How Many Players Are in Camp, and When Does the Roster Shrink?

Every team carries 90 players into camp, more than a third of whom will be gone before the opener. That trimming happens in one step this year rather than several: rosters must come down to a maximum of 53 players by August 30 at 6 p.m. ET, with waiver claims due the following afternoon. The deadline lands a few days earlier than usual, a wrinkle created by the 2026 season opening on a Wednesday instead of the customary Thursday. For players fighting for a roster spot, that’s less runway than in a typical summer to make a final impression.

The Padded-Practice Rules Coaches Can’t Ignore

Full pads don’t mean unlimited contact. Teams are capped at 16 padded practices between the veteran report date and the final preseason game, and pads can’t come out on more than three consecutive calendar days. A club can run three such stretches over the course of camp, but at least three days have to pass between them. Two-a-day practices, once a training camp staple, were phased out under the current labor deal and replaced by a single practice plus a walkthrough. It’s a gentler calendar than camps ran a decade ago, built around limiting soft-tissue injuries before the games that actually count.

Joint Practices Have Become the Real Audition

Increasingly, the most meaningful camp reps don’t happen in preseason games at all. Joint practices, where two teams share a field for a few days of controlled, whistle-heavy periods, let starters get game-speed work against an unfamiliar opponent without the injury risk of a live exhibition. Coaches have leaned into them because they can script the reps they want instead of turning a backup quarterback loose behind a scout-team line. Not every team buys in, though; some clubs skip joint practices entirely and keep camp closed to outsiders.

When Do Preseason Games Start, and When Are Final Cuts?

The preseason unfolds across three weekends this year, August 13-15, August 20-23 and August 27-29, according to the league’s official calendar. Add the Hall of Fame Game on August 6, and Arizona and Carolina effectively get a fourth exhibition, the trade-off for reporting more than a week early. Once those games wrap, teams have to reach 53 players by August 30 at 6 p.m. ET, then work the waiver wire to round out that initial roster with players cut elsewhere.

Nowhere will camp be watched more closely than in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where Mike McCarthy runs his first Steelers camp after reuniting with Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback he coached to a Super Bowl title in Green Bay. Rodgers has said this is likely his final season, and how the pairing looks in padded practices and joint sessions will shape expectations long before a preseason snap is played. Playbook Wire has more on why that reunion faces its real test at training camp.

There’s a quirk worth noting in this year’s report-date spread. Cardinals and Panthers players show up six days before the rest of the league, yet the runway to their first game is barely any longer. From their July 22 report date to the August 6 Hall of Fame Game is 15 days. For teams that report July 28, the wait to the first preseason weekend on August 13 is 16 days, essentially the same buildup despite the staggered start. Reporting early buys extra practice time within a fixed padded-practice ceiling; the finish line barely moves.

For a team-by-team breakdown of who reports when this year, Playbook Wire’s full list of 2026 training camp report dates covers all 32 clubs. The dates matter less than what happens once players are actually on the field, though, and by August 30 every roster in the league will look different than it does this week.
