Liverpool have moved beyond the exploratory stage in their pursuit of Bradley Barcola. ESPN reported that the club has held preliminary conversations with the France international’s representatives and is preparing to turn that interest into a formal proposal to Paris Saint-Germain. The move is Liverpool’s clearest signal yet that replacing Mohamed Salah’s production on the right side of the attack has become the summer’s top priority.
The gap between the two clubs on valuation is what makes this deal complicated. Sky Sports has reported that PSG consider Barcola worth as much as £145m, though other reports put the asking price closer to £128.5m. Liverpool’s own opening number has not been officially disclosed, and figures floated publicly have ranged from around £80m to well above £125m depending on how add-ons are structured. Until a formal bid is submitted and confirmed by either club, the precise shape of Liverpool’s proposal stays unofficial.
What is not in dispute is Barcola’s leverage. He has two years left on his PSG contract and has made clear he will not sign an extension. Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth explained the thinking behind that stance: “He’s intimated to PSG that he’s not going to sign a new contract. That’s primarily because in the biggest games last season, he was on the bench.” Barcola came off the bench in both of PSG’s recent Champions League final wins, watching from the sidelines despite winning nine trophies in two seasons in Paris.
Buried underneath the transfer noise is a number that gets far less attention than the fee itself. Barcola has scored 11 goals in 29 Ligue 1 appearances this season, tops on the PSG squad’s scoring chart, even as he loses out on minutes in the club’s biggest matches. That output from a player PSG signed from Lyon for roughly £40m in 2023 is part of why the club now wants a fee several times that amount.
