That reshuffle means Barcelona’s actual bow of the season will come against Elche earlier in the campaign, with the Athletic Club fixture now sitting in round two of the schedule rather than round one, as also reflected on Athletic Club’s own matchday page.
Since 2011, Barcelona have won 38 of their 55 meetings with Athletic Club across all competitions, against just five defeats and 12 draws for the Basque club.
Recent form has followed that pattern closely, producing some of the lopsided scorelines that fuel debate over metrics like expected goals. Barcelona routed Athletic 5-0 in the January 2026 Supercopa de España, then beat them 4-0 in the sides’ November 2025 league meeting. Athletic broke that streak with a 1-0 win when the two sides met again on March 7, 2026.

The rescheduling was part of a wider shakeup La Liga president Javier Tebas outlined in April 2026, when he confirmed the opening round of the 2026-27 season would be split across two windows to protect players coming off World Cup duty. “Hemos hecho un estudio y es muy fácil que podamos dividir la primera jornada en seis partidos sobre el 14 de agosto y otros tres o cuatro entre semana,” Tebas said.
That framework traces back to the Spanish players’ union agreement with the league, which guarantees three weeks of vacation and three weeks of preseason training to anyone who reached the World Cup’s final rounds. Barcelona-Athletic Club was one of four opening-round matches pushed to midweek dates for that reason, alongside Atletico Madrid-Malaga, Valencia-Betis and Real Madrid-Real Sociedad.
