NBA free agency erupts: Giannis to Miami, LeBron leaves the Lakers, Kawhi returns to Toronto

The opening hours of the 2026 NBA offseason reshaped the league. Three of basketball’s biggest names are on the move, or have signaled they will be, and the balance of power looks different already. Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded to the Miami Heat, LeBron James told the Los Angeles Lakers he is leaving, and Kawhi Leonard is heading back to the Toronto Raptors.

Giannis lands in Miami

The loudest move involved Giannis. The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade the two-time MVP, along with Bobby Portis, to the Heat. In return, Milwaukee received a large package: Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (2026, 2031 and 2033), a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick. Giannis, who won the championship with Milwaukee in 2021, now anchors an ambitious project in South Florida.

LeBron leaves the Lakers

At 41 and about to enter a record 24th NBA season, LeBron James informed the Lakers he will not return for 2026-27. His destination is not settled, though the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are among the most discussed landing spots. His departure closes a chapter in Los Angeles and opens one of the summer’s biggest storylines.

Kawhi returns to Toronto

Kawhi Leonard is reuniting with the Raptors, the franchise he led to the 2019 championship. The Los Angeles Clippers agreed to send him back to Canada. In exchange, the Clippers receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-round picks in 2030 and 2033, and a 2027 first-round pick swap.

The calendar explains the frenzy. The negotiating window opened in late June, and contracts can only be made official from July 6, which tends to concentrate agreements and verbal commitments in the first days. More moves are likely before the ink dries.

Taken together, the three deals lift some contenders and weaken others. Miami adds one of the league’s most dominant players, Toronto accelerates its project with a proven star, and the Lakers must reinvent themselves without LeBron. The Eastern Conference in particular looks deeper and more competitive with Giannis in Miami.
