Erling Haaland picked the biggest stage to deliver. His 86th-minute strike gave Norway a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the World Cup Round of 32 and set up a last-16 meeting with Brazil. It was a landmark night for a country that had never before won a knockout match at a World Cup.
The game swung more than once. Antonio Nusa opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a superb curling effort from the edge of the box, set up by Martin Ødegaard. Ivory Coast responded after the break, and Amad Diallo equalized in the 74th minute. With extra time looming, Haaland pounced on a Patrick Berg assist to win it late and send Norway through.
A historic breakthrough
The result carries real weight. Norway had returned to the World Cup after decades away, and this was the first knockout-round victory in the nation’s history. Built around Haaland and Ødegaard, two of Europe’s most valued players, this Norwegian side has turned promise into progress on the sport’s biggest stage.
Ivory Coast will feel the disappointment. The Elephants pushed Norway hard and looked capable of forcing extra time after Diallo’s equalizer, but they could not hold on in the closing minutes. Their exit ends a spirited run at a tournament that expanded to 48 teams for the first time.
Brazil awaits
Now comes the hardest test of all. Norway will face Brazil, the tournament’s record five-time champion, in the Round of 16. Brazil advanced with a dramatic comeback win over Japan, and the clash pits one of the game’s most storied nations against a rising force led by one of the world’s most feared strikers.
Much of the buildup will center on Haaland. His finishing has been decisive throughout the tournament, and stopping him will be Brazil’s central challenge. For Norway, simply reaching this stage is an achievement, but the team will believe it can push further with a match-winner of his caliber leading the line.
